“When I attended another high school, learning was flat, like a sheet of paper. It was one side of the paper or the other. At Waldorf, learning is round – like a ball you can hold in your hands and look at from many directions.”

Service learning includes ongoing learning—work before a project begins and reflection after the project finishes. Preparation before a service project offers opportunities for the students to learn about the underlying structures and injustices of our society; political, economic, and social challenges; and why the service project is needed. Reflections after a project focus on personal process as well as social awareness and creative social problem solving.
A few examples of service learning opportunities offered to our students include the freshman biodynamic farm trip in Sacramento where students support a local CSA, a sophomore Spanish immersion trip where students worked with new immigrants in a housing project near the Mexican border in San Diego, juniors serving as class peer health educators by facilitating health awareness workshops, and the Girls Leadership Institute peer facilitators supporting students at our lower school. Sophomores and juniors also participate in a work experience week during their spring break focusing on a combined career exploration and service learning opportunity.
